How and Why Gachagua Tried to Block Osoro from Becoming Majority Whip

Majority Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro has accused impeached DP Rigathi Gachagua of trying to block his appointment to one of Parliament’s most powerful positions, citing age, experience, and tribal bias as reasons.

Osoro says Gachagua openly opposed his nomination during internal party consultations before President William Ruto, arguing that the young legislator was too inexperienced to handle the responsibilities of Chief Whip, a role critical for coordinating MPs and managing legislative business.

But Osoro claims the real reason was tribal calculations. According to him, Gachagua believed his ethnic community was too small, contributing only a minor percentage of votes toward President Ruto’s 2022 victory. “Leadership is national, not a village contest,” Osoro said, describing the Deputy President’s approach as overly tribal and dismissive of smaller communities.

Political analysts say this reflects Gachagua’s long-standing strategy of favoring representatives from larger ethnic groups, often sidelining capable leaders from smaller communities. By opposing Osoro, they say, Gachagua reinforced a political culture that prioritizes ethnic arithmetic over merit.

Despite the opposition, Osoro won the Chief Whip position and has since focused on legislation, constituency projects, and national development initiatives. His rise highlights a growing tension in Kenyan politics between generational talent and entrenched tribal calculations.

Observers note that Osoro’s journey sends a message to young leaders across the country: competence and resilience can overcome both age-based prejudice and ethnic gatekeeping. His appointment also challenges the narrative that political influence should be determined solely by community size or loyalty to senior leaders.

As Kenya prepares for future elections, Osoro’s story could mark a shift in how leadership is awarded — emphasizing merit, performance, and national outlook over tribal or generational hierarchies.
