How Malala Brokered Talks to Open a Possible Path Back to Government for Gachagua

Fresh political intrigue has emerged following revelations that Cleophas Malala played a central role in facilitating contact between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and veteran power broker Fazul Mohammed, a figure widely regarded as one of the most influential behind-the-scenes operatives in government circles.

Malala, who had been largely off the political radar in recent weeks, resurfaced amid growing speculation that he was involved in negotiations aimed at easing Gachagua’s path back into government. The speculation gained traction after photos surfaced showing Gachagua at Fazul’s office—an encounter Gachagua himself later acknowledged.

Sources familiar with the matter say Malala personally introduced Gachagua to Fazul and initiated discussions focused on opening channels to President William Ruto’s camp. Notably, this was not a courtesy visit. Insiders describe it as a calculated business engagement driven by mutual interests rather than political friendship.

Fazul is known as a disciplined and strategic operator who has consistently aligned himself with the government of the day. Those who have worked with him describe him as a “master chess player” who rarely engages with opposition figures unless there is a clear pathway to a deal. In normal circumstances, Fazul would be unlikely to be seen publicly with Gachagua, whose fallout with the government is well documented.

That Gachagua reportedly went to Fazul’s office—rather than the other way around—has further fuelled speculation that negotiations are underway. Analysts view this as a signal that Gachagua’s camp is seeking structured re-engagement with the government through trusted intermediaries rather than direct political confrontation.

Observers are also quick to dismiss claims that Fazul is supporting the opposition. Instead, they argue his involvement suggests a transactional process aimed at stabilising political interests and securing a workable arrangement.

While the details of any deal remain unclear, Malala’s role as the go-between underscores his growing reputation as a political fixer capable of opening doors that would otherwise remain firmly shut.
