Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s trip to London appears to be facing serious challenges after his first major fundraising dinner reportedly failed to meet expectations.
The month-long UK tour was expected to help raise huge amounts of money ahead of the 2027 General Election. Reports indicate that organizers had hoped to collect at least Ksh 200 million during the London stay. However, the first dinner event attracted less than 100 people despite plans for a crowd of over 500 guests.
At the end of the event, only about Ksh 2 million had reportedly been raised. Diaspora supporters are also said to have promised another Ksh 1.5 million to help buy a pickup vehicle for the upcoming Olkalou by-election campaigns.
Sources within the diaspora circles claim that Gachagua was left frustrated by the poor turnout and low contributions. Reports further allege that he confronted some of the organizers who are facilitating his accommodation, transport, security, and movement in London. He is also said to have threatened to cut short the trip and return to Kenya if at least Ksh 50 million is not raised by the end of the week.
The former Deputy President had earlier announced that his visit to the United Kingdom was aimed at engaging Kenyans in the diaspora and marketing his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). He also hopes to build financial support for his larger political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections, where reports indicate he is targeting to raise up to Ksh 1 billion.
The slow start in London now raises questions about whether the diaspora will fully back his political movement financially. It also shows the growing difficulty politicians are facing in raising large campaign funds both locally and abroad.
